Nick, don't go AWOL here. The use of the word wasn't a slam. I've known Dave a long time via this board and the MrBeer board and he's not like that at all.
Maybe if you go back to his post and substitute "uninformed" for "ignorant" you will read it differently and not be so upset.
Seriously.......Dave is the LAST one to slam anyone.

I let my Mr Beer kit sit in the garage for over a year before I opened it.
Before my first brew day, I had read forum posts from mrbeerfans and HBT all which said that Mr B's 2-2-2 instructions was clever marketing and it would not produce the best results. I then read John Palmers
How to Make Beer online a few times. I let my first Mr B kit ferment for 3 weeks and then condition for a month before I tried one. I wasn't thrilled with the results. The beer was tasted weak and watery and wasn't carbonated enough. That being said, I was catching a pretty good buzz off each liter bottle, so I drank it anyway.
My second brew had much better feel and flavor, but it took a long time to really carbonate.
On my third brew, I stopped using Mr B's yeasts and started using a yeast that is more specific to the style I'm trying to make. That has made the biggest improvement so far. The second best improvement was for me to start asking questions about what I'm thinking about brewing on this website a few days prior to brewing. I've received some good advice on how to hit the target flavor I'm shooting for.

Hey, I way I have experienced it is to keep trying. There are NO hard and fast rules on the way, YOU, should brew. Do what works best for you and makes beer that you like.

I've always maintained that if you like the beer you've made, you've done it right.
But that's not what the OP was about. He's NOT liking the beer he's made. Therefore, something must be wrong. Aside from strict sanitation and some mathematical and chemical-type stuff, you're correct; there are no hard and fast rules. Many of us have made excellent Frankenbiers, throwing whatever leftover ingredients we have together. But even that takes a little knowledge and experience. But it's true that there are no (or at least very few) hard and fast rules.
What I find most interesting is the offense taken in my calling him ignorant, even though I stressed that it wasn't a derogatory statement, and went on in my post to do everything I could to encourage him to learn, ask questions, and stick with it. Maybe he would have been happier if I had told him he was, in fact, a sloppy brewer.
I just don't know.

Now Dave, don't you get offended too. And play nice, or I'll call your Mom! Seriously, everyone here knows you are a kind and helpful brewer. I'm sure Nick was just having a bad day, or took it wrong as people can in writing. I hope he comes back to the party soon. You boys can call the White House for a beer summit. At least we'll know something good happens in Washington!

No, I don't want people to choose up sides, but I don't want my intent to be misunderstood, either.
The whole can of Cheez-Wiz started over my use of the word "ignorant" in an otherwise encouraging post. As I and others have pointed out, I used the word correctly, and in context, and it was not a negative statement.
If Nick decides to flounce out of here, that's his business, of course. If he decides to stay and ask questions in a genuine effort to improve his skills, I'll do everything I can to help him. But I've always shot from the shoulder and called 'em as I sees 'em. I'm not going to put on velvet gloves for anyone. We're all adults here, and straight talk is what gets results.

OK, but if it comes to a physical confrontation, I have to say that my skills are available to the highest bidder. I accept payment in homebrew!

The name change my have been a little much, but answering like a Monty Python character was pretty funny. But hey, some times I'm not an adult either.
