About to try my hand at a Brewers Best kit….. first question so far…. Do I sanitize the nylon bag for the steeping grains?

The wort will be boiled after the steep, so there is really no need to sanitize it. Won't hurt if you do, but really not necessary...

Thanks guys. Now riddle me this….
BREW DAY SCHEDULE
1. Add the 1 oz. pack of Northern Brewer hops 2. Boil 15 minutes
3. Add the .5 oz. pack of Northern Brewer hops 4. Boil final 45 minutes
5. Terminate boil
Total Boil Time: 60 Minutes Continue to Step #6
: (time) : (time) : (time)
Do I boil the 1 oz for the last 15 mins? or the whole hour?

I'm learning that a 3 gallon boil takes quite a while on an electric stove

takes about 15-20 mins typically on my stove to get going. although i need to calibrate my new 5-gallon pot and work it into my beersmith profile (boil-off rate n such).

Wife bought me a 10 gallon brew pot. It's taking a lot more than that for me…. achieving a rolling boil is becoming tedious

do you keep the lid on the pot at the beginning? that will help build pressure inside the pot so that the boil gets going faster. if you don't have a clear lid, just remove it every few minutes just to check on it... don't wanna have the boil start under the lid and then blow out the hot break onto the stove top.

4 hours! FOUR!
3 and a half for the actual boiling/brewing and 45 minutes for the clean up and wait for the wort to cool down so I could pitch the yeast.
I want to think I did something wrong, so I can cut down on that time, but I'm not sure what it would be.

4 hours isn't too far off for a extract batch with a steep and 60 min boil, and especially being your first try at it. This is the only kind of brewing I do and always around 3 hrs or so from start to finish.
BYO mag. Has a nice article on doing it in 2 hrs, you need everything 100% ready to go and would need a wort chiller.

Thanks berryman
I'm not upset about the time as much as I'm surprised. I'm so used to MB and Coopers kits that I clearly wasn't prepared for this. I really like how much more involved I am in the beer this way, and I look forward to going AG one day. I just need to plan my day more appropriately now, rather than procrastinate for 12 hours before I start.
