Dry hopping with 5 a gallon paint strainer bag

Post by Banjo-guy »

I just used a sterilized 5 gallon paint strainer bag to dry hop in my LBK.
The bag is so large that I was able to weigh it down with a sterilized glass and thread the top part of the bag through the opening of the LBK and simply screw the lid on to hold the bag in place.
There is a lot of excess material hanging out side of the LBK.
Is this an infectious risk?
I'm wondering if the excess material of the paint strainer can transfer an infection into the beer. It seems like it should be ok.

No worries... I use 5 gal paint strainer, AKA hop sacks for dry hopping all the time. I've always just stuffed them in, and closed the lid.

Beer infecting microorganisms do not and can not "crawl up". They only "fall down".

So there is pretty much no way that they will crawl up the bag and get into your fermenter under the lid. They simply can't physically do that.

So your good.

FWIW I made some hop/spice bags by cutting the top few inches off one of the paint strainers into squares and sealing them with little cable ties.
