Well, this worked out

Post by FedoraDave »

I'm brewing a 2.5 gallon batch of 'NillaMilk Stout today. It's a recipe from the last RCE, and my batch turned out to be a gusher. It's a shame, too, because what I was able to taste was really good. So I felt it deserved a second chance.

Well, rather than use vanilla extract, I'm using real vanilla beans (which are expensive as hell! But I digress). I asked the guy at my LHBS about the best way to approach it, and he told me to make a tincture with a small amount of vodka.

Well, I don't keep hard liquor in the house, so I figured I'd have to go out and buy a small bottle just for this recipe. But it would be worth the cost.

So what happens? Last night, at bowling, I won high series for our face-off, which entitled me to some Holiday Cheer. Well, I would have preferred the case of Samuel Adams, but someone else beat me to it. But I was able to pick up a great big bottle of Absolut. So I don't have to go buy a little teeny bottle. Although this is gonna last me the rest of my life. I don't really drink distilled liquor at all.

You are really having a good month, Dave; engagement, better bottle, vodka, etc. I highly recommend the purchase of a lottery ticket, and soon. :)
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

Interesting you should make this observation, Duf. We have a weekly 50/50 drawing at bowling, and I always buy a $5 string of tickets, and my numbers are always ridiculously far off from the winning number. I figure I must have won a bunch of big screen TVs from the Elks Club in Peoria, or something, because it's like my numbers were taken from an entirely different roll of tickets.

Nice score! I buy vodka, not to drink, but to use in my bubblers. If it does happen to get sucked back into the bucket, the vodka adds no taste and no chance of mean bugs. There's not enough vodka in there if it gets sucked back to the wort to hurt anything.

I sure hope this batch goes better for you.

Froze, I've done that, too, but I bought a very small bottle of cheap vodka, rather than the good stuff. For this, though, it was recommended that I get something high-end, like Ketel or Grey Goose.
