I don't use much pilsner but that does seem like lots of Rye. When my hop stock is down (that could take a while) I'm going to try to get me some Zythos to try.

I know it seems a lot. For us the spiciness of the rye plays well with the Zythos hop blend. I am going to need more I am on my last little bit!! I loosely based this recipe on Northern Brewer's AG--RyePA, which I have brewed numerous times. When my dad had this for the first time. He said it reminded of the rye beers he had back home (Germany).

I love rye beers and have made a few and have one scheduled for late February/March but rarely go over 2 lbs. Neither was really a RyePA but one was close. Not sure what I'll do but I'm going to subscribe to this thread to keep up with you on this one.

Check out the recipes at Northern most of their rye recipes are 2 pound plus. If I remember right it was their RyePA was the first partial mash I did.

I love using Rye. I did notice you boiled off 3 gals? Seems like a lot. How long are you boiling for, and why? Just trying to learn...

OK, I saw 90 minute boil.

Plus pilsner malt needs a 90 min boil to drive off DMS. With the boil off and shrinkage 3 gallons loss total sounds right. I also lose close to a gallon from the break materials. That is one thing I hate about kits they give you a volume that is before all your losses are taken into account. The grain percentage button is great. You can adjust a recipe to work on your kit. Now if Brad would only do that with the hops!!!!

DUH!!! he did it is a big button on top called ADJ BITTERNESS!!! As I was playing around with this recipe. I am going to add a pound of Munich 30L to bring the color to par and change the late addition hops to a hop-stand with a whirlpool.

I've made roggenbier with 55% rye. And it was great. Don't fear the rye!
