Final opinion on Mangrover Jack's Workhorse yeast

Post by Gymrat »

This yeast does provide a good clean flavor profile. However it is a low attenuator. My summer wheat beer went from 1.050 to 1.016 and my International IPA went from 1.065 to 1.022. I think this would be a great yeast to use for a good clean very malty tasting beer but it is a very poor choice for an IPA. IPAs are supposed to be somewhat dry and really showcase the hops. I am going to stick with Nottingham yeast for my IPAs from now on.

Bummer, I was hoping for better news.
It may be a while but I hope to dry their West Coast yeast in one of my summer session beers. For the most part, I'm reading its a pretty good attenuator.
FWIW, it may just be a fluke. The 007 I use often gets to 80% but the last time it only got to 70% so maybe it needed more aeration or sometimes, the malts used can be the culprit.

I used it with two different grainbills. Same results both times. It is the yeast. And the only way toget more air in the wort 5han I do is to use an O2 device. Even then I bet the difference is marginal.

Hmm... this sounds like something I can consider for my brown ale. I want to try to make it finish not as dry, so keeping a few FG points will be a good way to go instead of adding more malt.

London ESB yeast is my choice for that purpose.
