El Dorado and Galaxy

Post by Beer-lord »

I keg of beer today that had both of these hops in it. I'm not sure what to expect but both the aroma and test jar were definitely different and nice. Can't wait to see what they are like. I think a pale ale is perfect to test hops.

I'm glad I grabbed a lb of that stuff. Not sure if I needed 1 lb of El Dorado though.
I just wrote the person who gave me the recipe I used and he told me it was very important to keep the grain bill very simple and clean. This is the lightest color beer I've made and I'm thinking the hops have nothing but 'shine on' time in this one.

I love the taste of Galaxy hops. But they really do bitter even at late additions. If you have access to Shalfly beer, their Tazmanian IPA is a SMaSH with 2 row and Galaxy hops.

Mmm... Tropical fruit and various flavors of jolly ranchers. I hope that it turns out awesome.

I'm not sure I'm going to buy El Dorado again (Jolly Ranchers). NOT that the beers tasted bad, they did not, I drank all of them... but its just not something I really want in my beer on an ongoing basis. It was interesting though. Maybe it blends with the tropical fruit well.

I am very concerned about the jolly ranchers taste too but the person who shared the recipe with me said he's done a number of batches until he got the right balance. Other than this recipe, I'm not sure what to do with the rest of the pound I bought but it's gonna be used one way or another.
I think it might be best to use these mostly as a very late addition and/or dry hop only.

You could probably use them as a bittering hop even if you decide you hate them.

The key, in my opinion, with El Dorado is having some Munich in the recipe. El Dorado is a very nice and popular hop for commercial breweries right now. I like it but it needs a nice malt backbone to help not make it cloyingly sweet.
