Second runnings brew

Post by LouieMacGoo »

Between reading and listening to podcasts lately I've been hearing a lot about making beer from the second runnings of your grain, especially if your brewing a high gravity beer with a large grain bill it makes it easy to brew a second, smaller beer from the spent grain. I decided that the Scotch Strong Ale that the_professor (Joe) and I were doing for the RCE would be a good opportunity to do this. After lifting my BIAB grain out of the brew pot and letting it drain I set it aside in a smaller brew pot with a 3 gallons of water to use later.

After the first brew was done. I took the small brew pot with the spent grains and lifted it onto the burner and pulled the grain bag out and slightly squeezed it. What was left was about 2 gallons or so of wort at about 127* with a SG of about 1.035 according to my refractometer, So I lit the burner to bring it to a boil. While waiting I remembered that I had about 3/4 lbs of Light DME so I decided to add that as well as about 6 oz Agave nectar which bumped the SG to 1.045ish.

Once to a boil I added the hops and finings that I had as follows:

.75 oz Bravo Hops 60 min boil
1.0 oz Belma Hops 30 min boil
1.0 oz Belma Hops 15 min boil

.25 tsp Irish Moss 10 min boil
.50 tsp yeast Neutrient 10 min boil

Once cooled I racked to my BD conical and had about 1.75 gallons so I topped it off with enough water to reach the 8.5 quart mark on the fermenter and checked the SG which ended up at 1.054 and pitched some US 05.

I'm not real sure what this will end up like but it should be a bit of a hop bomb in the 4 to5%-ish range. I will be sure to let ya'll know when I finished up.

The Parti-Gyle Belgin second runnings I did came out awesome as a Belgian Pale Ale. I guess with BIAB ther could be some good sugars still hanging around in the bag on a high gravity beer. Think you will be pleased with it.

Interesting. I went the other way, adding candi syrup to half of a Belgian Pale to make a Dubbel.

Never mind, there it is.

It had crossed my mind to see if there was enough left in that much grain for a second smaller beer, but I had kind of dismissed it.

But you have me considering it again.

I have made one beer from the Barclay Perkins site a few years ago and it was the 1868 Younger 60. It was a wonderful beer even though my homemade invert sugar was more golden than the #2 that was called for.

So maybe I'll have another go at the invert sugar and see if second runnings will support a gallon or two of the 60. I'll just need to have some fuggles and some Nottingham/S04 on hand.

Thanks for posting Leigh. This was in the back of my mind as I'll be brewing my RIS in a month. Now I'm sure I can get a table beer with 20+ pounds of grain. Keep us updated. :clink:

I do this a lot. With my crazy high ABV brews. It is a great way increase the pipeline. I usually do the second boil the next day. I have been toying with idea of souring the second mash, sort of a play on a Berliner Wiess. I use my second 15 gallon kettle for the mash tun allows for lots of grain!!

Well along with bottling my RCE (Scotch Strong Ale) on Sunday I also bottled this hop bomber, but it was anything but easy. The taste sample was very hop forward to say the least but with a spicy, citrusy flavor and a clean finish. The FG on this ended up at 1.006 so the ABV ended up about 6.3%.

Now as far as the bottling... The trub in the bottom of the BDC fermenter was above the spigot so when I attached the bottling wand to it nothing would come out. So I resorted to removing the lid and getting my auto-siphon and attaching that to the bottle wand. Everything seemed to be going well but there seemed to be a lot of air in the tubing. I got about 15 bottles filled and noticed that the flow had just about stopped. Apparently some hop particles got caught in the end of the wand and clogged up the wand. After clearing the clog and starting again I was finally able to get the final 4 bottles filled. Yep, with all the excess trub I was only able to get 19 bottles from this batch. It should be interesting to see how this one comes out.

This sounds like a wickedly good idea to me especially if you consume it very fresh on a hot summer day. A nice light bodied sour is great lawnmower beer.
