Pulled the trigger on a corona style mill. Got to thinking that I could control the grind a bit more and improve efficiency with a finer grind. My efficiency has been a bit low, and as I do BIAB, I though I could improve on what my local store had been providing. Mainly though, I thought it would be more fun! Makes me feel like I'm more involved in the process.
It was pretty easy to set up, and didn't take long to dial in to where I thought the grind should be. There is no "setting". It's just eyeballing, and evaluating the grist that comes out until it's how you like it. I clamped it on the kitchen table and used bowls to collect the grain. It made a fair mess, but not too bad. I may look into adapting a bucket or some such set up, to do it outside.
I only do 2 1/2 gallon batches with an average of 5 lbs of grain. Don't think I would want to do much more that that with this grinder. Although it operated smoothly and evenly. I know it's not much compared to what some of you guys use, but It's a fun new toy for me. Here are some pics of my cat Maceo helping break it in.

Nice job....to make the hand cranking easier, remove and replace the bolt that holds the handle on with a hex top bolt. Then you can hook it up to a power drill with a socket attachment. Pull the trigger and it will zip right through that grain.

Yup BlackDuck, I've seen that mod on the interwebs, but I think I'm going to keep it old school. It helps burn off the beer that I'm drinking as I crank.

I use a gallon size freezer bag over the business end to collect the grain...
When it fills, just change it out for another one!

Hand cranking 2.5 gallon BiaB batches--doesn't sound so bad. I mean, I'd definitely rather use a drill--but, 5 lbs isn't so much that hand cranking would be completely awful or anything.
