Brew Recipe MIA, Please Help. :)

Post by TheCanfield »

Hello all, I have come to you from MrBeerFans.com (RIP) and have a question I know you will be able to help me with.
Months ago (maybe a year) I picked up some ingredients for a brew but unfortunately never got around to brewing it up. Now I have a list and no idea what I have. I was hoping you guys could lend your experience and let me know what you think. My biggest question is really the hop boil. Due to the age of the yeast (Best Before: APR-23-14) I have a starter going. Once again any input is greatly appreciated.

How many gallons is this batch going to be?
Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain.
Quaintest thoughts — queerest fancies,
Come to life and fade away:
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today.

There are many more experienced brewers than I.
But at a glance I'm thinking Marzen, Oktoberfest, that type of amber German. If you don't use all of the Munich, and about half each on the specialty grains, you fit in that realm. I try three methods in searching recipes by ingredients: search HomebrewTalk with your main ingredients, go to the Briess site and search by ingredient, or plug them into an online calculator and see what matches.
Welcome aboard! Let us know what you do, and how it works out.

That's what I was thinking as well. Maybe an altbier?

Ok, so I looked around per @John Sand's suggestions (I never thought to look at the manufacturer's website) and made some progress.
I pulled up the CBW Munich LME data sheets since this was my majority ingredient and at the bottom I found "Use alone for styles such as Oktoberfest, Marzen or Bock beers." Then everything started to click, Bock is one of my favorite beers and also one I have not brewed before. I also happen to remember that I was glancing at beer kits at Midwest Supplies. I searched their site for 'Bock' and stumbled upon their 'Rich German Bock', looked closer at the ingredients and sure enough they match the ones I have!
Thanks for a push in the right directions.

I think Midwest has links to the instructions for their kits.
