Mangrove Jack Craft Yeast

Post by MadBrewer »

I know Mangrove Jack's yeasts have been used by some here and talked about, but not sure if there is a thread just for them. I do not know how they came about, but I checked back with them recently to find they have a full lineup of dry yeasts. Who knows how many of them will be made available in the US from our normal suppliers but it's really cool to see so many great dry yeasts available. I have used 2 of their strains in the past, both performed as described and I would not hesitate to try any others. I have seen some online suppliers carry a couple of the strains, but I was shocked at how many they actually have. New to the line up they have several for Belgain strains including a Wit strain. They have 2 lager strains and a Cali Lager as well as the others they have had for a while like the West Coast and English strains. I actually contacted them with email to ask what happened to a few strains they had before. They reply I got was that the names and style recomendations were reworked. I no longer seen the British Ale (which they said was replaced with Strong Ale), the Burton Union yeast (said was changed/replaced with the Liberty Ale), the Newcastle Dark Ale (said was changed/replaced with the Empire Ale). I didn't ask about the Workhorse Strain because I didn't notice it was missing at first but my guess is it was changed to the Cali Lager since it had a wide temp range. If you compare some of the stats and info between the old and new yeasts you can see it's described almost the same. It seems they simply renamed them and adapted them for a wider range of styles.

Here's the full line up from their website:

It's interesting that you just posted this. They had a full page add showing their lineup in the latest issue of Zymurgy magazine that I was looking at this morning. I wasn't aware that they expanded their line that much.

It's great to see such an expansion in dry yeasts but I'm not sure how many will be made easily available. I used the MJ M07 British Ale on two different batches, although I didn't care for it in the finished beer it performed just as described...I simply made the wrong choice for the beers I used it in. I also used the MJ Bohemian Lager twice. Once for a "Steam Beer" which worked well at ale temps and then again in an Oktoberfest where it also worked well.

Out of the new strains, I would actually like to try the Witbier I have been thinking about brewing one for the summer. I'm curious if the Liberty Ale might be something similar to Wyeast 1968 or Wlp002. It is described as an ESB yeast for English and American hoppy beers.

In a beerkits.com kit I ordered over a year ago, it came with their version of 05 and it was a nice, clean yeast. But, this isn't something our LHBS stocks and I've never tried another yeast by MJ but I've read good things about them.

That is interesting. No sooner than I posted this, the wife brought in the mail and gave me the new Zymergy. I aslo just seen the page with the MJ lineup. Looking at that, it seems they did exactly what I supspect and changed a few names and broaded/tweaked the styles they are suggested for.

Hopefully we can see a few avaialble. My LHBS doesnt carry MJ but a few online places do. Rebel Brewer, Williams Brewing and Adventures in Homebrewing I think.

I have the Workhorse in my fridge, but haven't used it yet. I have used the Cider yeast a couple times so far and have been impressed. Quick and clean. I got both from an eBay seller, Missouri Home brew Supply or something like that. $5 or so, free shipping, and got it in 2 days.

I used the Newcastle Dark Ale yeast in a Scottish ale and have been happy with the results. I have more types that I bought online, and am looking forward to trying them. It's good to see also that there will be a full variety to try in the future -- they seem like a good innovative company.

Glad to hear the Newcastle Dark worked well for your Scottish Ale. I have a selection of the Mangrove Jack yeast as well and want to try the Newcastle Dark on a Scotish 60. But looks like I may be doing a brews with the British Ale yeast first.

Thanks for sharing, I just downloaded the .Pdf file containing details of their individual yeast strains. I plan to do a little research over the weekend to learn what I can, it's exciting to know that a wider variety of dry yeast strains are out there now.
