Avery Maharaja, converting it to extract?

Post by jivex5k »

The Maharaja Imperial IPA

OG: 1.090
AE: 1.012

Grist:
Pale 2-Row – 93.8%
Victory Malt – 3.1%
C-120 – 3.1%

Hops:
60 min – Columbus (13.9% AA) – 1.09 oz
30 min – Columbus (13.9% AA) – 1.09 oz
0 min – Centennial (13.9% AA) – 2.18 oz
0 min – Simcoe (11.4% AA) – 2.18 oz
Dry-Hop – Simcoe – 4.38 oz
Dry-Hop – Centennial – 2.18 oz
Dry-Hop – Chinook – 2.18 oz

Yeast – California
Ferm Temp – 68F

Ok let me try to make sense of this....
So the hop amounts are for a 5 gallon batch, which is right on point.
The grain amounts don't list LBs, but I assume you try to hit the OG with software to figure out exactly how much you need.
How would I go about substituting extract for this? I can steep the C-120 I believe, but the Pale Malt I would use Pale Extract, the Victory I have no idea.

Also, hop utilization will be lower due to a partial boil instead of a full boil. I can only boil 3.5 gallons of liquid comfortably.

I'm a bit lost, and would love to make this beer. If a full boil is truly needed for that hop profile...hmmm, maybe I could make a 2.5 gallon batch and do a full boil.

I'm not good at conversions but I took the AG recipe I just did and using Beersmith, defaulted to extract conversion. Here's what I got!
(by the way, I just drank a small amount when I got home from work. So I hit 1.078 and got more beer than I should have but I'm very happy with that and may try to hit the same mark again next time. 1.090 is big and I like them a bit smaller so I can enjoy them more.)

Awesome thanks,
Yeah this accounts for a full boil so I think I'd be best cutting it in half exactly so I can boil 3.2 gallons and get the full hop utilization.
I could make a second one with a completely different hop schedule too!

Whew that is one heavy beer BTW....90 is freaking huge! 12lbs of extract, damn, I guess all those hops need that backbone haha.
I'm not being pushed away though damnit, I'm gonna make this beer. It will be one for special friends.
