Dumped my reliable and dependable Polder oven thermometer in the
wort yesterday....
Need a new one and I'm seeing that instaread's are approximately the same
price as the one I killed...
Bought a Harbor cheapy a few months backand it's off by three degrees, so I can't depend on it.

^I agree with this^
I had a Thermapen Classic for around 5 years. Instant read and accurate I used it, abused it and made a heck of a lot of good beer with it. Even started using it cooking steaks and what a difference accurately knowing the internal meat temperature (then came sous vide, but that's a whole nother game changer). Around Christmas I decided to treat myself to the near model and give my older one to my son. He doesn't brew, but says he uses the heck out of it when grilling.

I have an Epica I bought for <$20 a couple of years ago. It takes about five seconds to read, but the $70 I saved buys a lot of seconds. It has survived being dropped into the mash.
Amazon has a bunch rated at 4.5 stars for under $20.

Never mind, there it is.
I have a Thermapop too, it works great. Gave another to a friend and she loves using it for cooking!
