Re: Getting back into it

Best of luck, though I'm sure you don't need it. :fedora: I, too, am thinking of entering a comp this fall. But the nearest drop-off location is over an hour away, and I detest packaging beer for shipping. Eventually, my desire for certified beer judge feedback will probably win out over my distaste...

Re: Post your screw up/mistake here

Once, I bottled a whole batch (fortunately, in this case, I mostly brew 2.5-gallon batches), and was putting stuff away and thought to myself, "hmm...why is there still liquid in the pot that I use to boil and cool my priming sugar/water mixture?" Yep - bottled and capped approximately a c...

Re: Cryo Hops

Haven't used any yet, but I just bought a few 1 oz packages with my latest online order from Atlantic Brew Supply. 1 each of Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe. Should be arriving tomorrow. I have no specific plans for them, but will incorporate them into some upcoming recipes, most likely as whirlpool or dry...

Re: Getting back into it

I think it's generally advisable to let any fermentation "free rise" a few degrees as activity slows, to keep the yeast "awake" enough to do their cleanup. Even if not a full, formal D-rest, it might be worthwhile, resulting in a cleaner-tasting beer.

Re: Thermapen - worth the money?

I have another brand that is cheaper, maybe $20. It reads accurately, and takes 5-6 seconds. The thermapen is faster, but the extra time doesn't add up to a minute on brew-day, and I saved $60-80. Check Amazon, there are many options. I've had this one for years. Accurate, water-resistant, reading ...

Re: Poll: which upgrade to pursue?

Wow, I did not expect the landslide that I got! Thanks, all, for the opinions. To answer MadBrewer's questions - I do have an old fridge that I use with a Johnson controller for fermentation control. And I'm probably about 70/30 dry yeast. A couple of items make me a little hesitant to jump on the w...

Re: Who got hit by the Nor'easter?

Western New England checking in....we got pounded pretty good. I'm guessing 20-21" but it could be more. I went out at 1:30 in the afternoon and cleared 17". Went out again about 8pm and would guess there was an additional 3-4". It never turned to rain, and the snow has mostly stopped...

Poll: which upgrade to pursue?

I own none of the above. Which would be, in your opinion, the one that would improve my brewing more than the others, from a cost/benefit perspective? Feel free to state your case in replies. Background: For oxygen, currently I just shake the hell out of the carboy after transferring. For pH, I know...

Re: In Memory jimjohnson--Brewer Of The Month March 2017

I've been away from the Borg for a bit, and this is very sad news to return and see. But BOTM is a very fitting tribute. The picture of Jim enjoying the company of his grandkids in the other thread is one I'd seen before and made an impression on me then, and it brought a tear to the eye to see it i...

Haven't been here lately because I had a hard drive crash last month and it took a while to get everything back up and running on a new PC. Hoping to be more active going forward. :shots:

Re: Share your unpopular opinion

Brulosophy experiments quite often prove that experienced tasters can't tell the difference when long-cherished homebrew "rules" are broken. Which unpopular opinion would you like to see validated? Take your pick! Any experiment with a p-value above 0.05 -- which is the majority of them --...

Re: How much have you brewed in 2016?

Some of you guys really crank out the brews - good on you! I'm jealous (he said, while pointing at: F.Dave, TonyKZ1, jimjohnson, mashani, Dawg LB Steve) My total for '16 was not as much as I brewed in recent years, but in the ballpark. Life has gotten MUCH busier than it was even a few years ago (ki...

.....one of our Coors breweries is gearing up to brew Miller product, and it has been a MAJOR undertaking..... It can't be that hard to change the label on the fermentation tank. :)   Believe it or not, they use completely different wort streams and completely different pro...
